Cape May Beaches
Of course, we are known for our beaches; but were you aware of the variety of beaches that we have? And besides that, beach tag fees are reasonable, the water is some of the cleanest around. It’s safe and well-kept, plus the businesses are locally owned! But back to the beaches; we can give a list of the beaches, but we have some favorites. Cape May is a hoof-shaped spit of land at the southernmost tip of New Jersey. The Delaware Bay is on the western edge, Cape May city faces the Atlantic on the southeastern side, and the Cape May Canal, built around the time of World War 2, cuts off the island from the mainland on the northern side.
Sunset Beach
Sunset Beach is located near the southernmost tip of the peninsula. It is best known for two things, sunsets, and Cape May diamonds. The beach itself is all pebbles, and swimming is not advised due to underwater hazards and currents. However, the sunsets are stunning, and there have been many marriage proposals at the site. It is also where polished quartz rocks that sparkle like diamonds can be found with a discerning eye.
Cape May Point
Quiet, and relatively flat, Cape May Point has been privy to some refurbishing from the Army Corps of Engineers. It is family-friendly, and a bit isolated, with limited amenities, but that is part of the charm.
City of Cape May
There are many different choices for the City of Cape May, and you should be aware of beach times, guards, fees, and ordinances. Despite the fees and the regulations, these are marvelous beaches! Look for The Cove, popular for weddings, families, and all-around fun in the sun.
Cape May Nature Center
The Cape May Nature Center is one of nine staffed nature centers run by the New Jersey Audobon Society. It includes an education campus, with programs for adults and children like Beachcombing, and Nighttime at the Beach. Climb the three-story observation tower, and stroll through the multi-themed gardens.
South Cape May Meadows
Located in an advantageous area on the Atlantic Flyway, the 200-acre South Cape May Meadows is the perfect spot for world-class birding. You can view multiple species crossing the Delaware Bay, either for seasonal migration, or foraging. There is a trail system across several types of habitats. National Geographic lists Cape May as the world’s best destination for birding.
If birding is your interest, there are weekly walks sponsored by the Bird Observatory. Higbee Beach is another destination well known to birders.
Cape May Point State Park
How about seeing some nature on foot? Hiking is a great outdoor activity in Cape May and there are numerous places to check out. Cape May Point State Park is a great place to start. They offer three easy trails for hikers of all ages and abilities.
The Duck Pond Trail is an easy half-mile hike that offers views of Lighthouse Pond. The Monarch Trail is a 1.2-mile hike that brings hikers through a variety of different habitats including coastal dunes, the beach, and freshwater marsh. Lastly, the Plover Trail is a 1.5-mile hike that is only open during the fall and winter. It’s closed in the spring and summer to protect nesting birds.
