Some people enjoy running to keep in shape, but there are many more benefits to competing in races near Cape May, NJ. First and foremost, Cape May is the perfect spot for running near the ocean, where you have spectacular views and cool ocean breezes. Second, having a goal when running is always better, so you are more likely to stick to a training schedule. And third, most races benefit charities or disaster relief, so you are running for something bigger than yourself.
Great Practice Runs in Cape May
Whether you are in training for a specific race or just here for a visit, getting out early before things get busy and taking a quick run is always fun. Here are our favorites:
Beach Avenue
The iconic street to run in Cape May is Beach Avenue. From the Carroll Villa Hotel, you can easily walk to Beach Avenue and then head towards Cape May Point or in the opposite direction. The total distance is just about 4.4 miles. You can add more at the Point or run on the beach.
Victorian Architecture Tour
This 2.2-mile course travels through several historic districts with elaborate Victorian homes. Don’t trip as you gawk at the colorful turrets and wraparound porches. Much of this trail is on pedestrian-only walkways, but there may be crowds in the summer.
Cape May Point and Lighthouse
The Cape May Point and Lighthouse Run starts at the east edge of the Cape May Meadows or on Sunset Blvd. You can either clock 4.5 miles, add some side streets, or even cut through the sandy paths in the Meadows for the return.
Cape May Wetlands
The Cape May Wetlands Run lets you avoid crowds likely during summer. The 3.3-mile track is both boardwalk and dirt, winding around the areas east of the Lighthouse.
Annual Races
If you have completed your training and are ready for a race, we have races throughout most of the year:
Great Cape May Footrace
The Great Cape May Footrace includes both 5K and 10K. From its start in 1980, the race is held the 3rd weekend in May. Both races start at the intersection of Perry Street and Beach Avenue. Runners must maintain at least a 16-minute mile to participate.
Escape the Cape Triathlon
The Escape the Cape Triathlon is not for the faint of heart! Except for the half-mile kid fun run, two Triathlon events are for the serious athlete. There are some options for a relay or sprints with half the distances, but you still start the race with a daring 12-foot jump off the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. The bike portion of the race is on a closed course through vineyards and backroads. Look for the event in June.
Beach to Brewery 10K
The Beach to Brewery Race occurs in September and benefits the Surfrider Foundation. The course begins at Beach Avenue and 1st Street and ends at Cape May Brewing Company. Runners must maintain at least a 16-minute mile.
Always Ready 5k
The Always Ready 5K allows the participant to run through the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May. The race will start and finish at Harborview Park. It began in 2022 as part of the continuing effort to promote community relations among the Coast Guard members, their families, and residents of Cape May. It takes place in October.
Run the VineyardsÂ
The Run the Vineyards Races offer 24 opportunities for races through scenic courses. There are two races featuring Cape May, the Willow Creek 8K and 5K in April, and the Down the Shore 8K and 5K in September. Both have live music and complimentary wine (after the run).
Hallowed Half Marathon
Enjoy a Halloween-style race at the Hallowed Half Marathon in late October. If you aren’t up for the miles of a half marathon, you can run it with a partner as a relay. Or, the night before the half marathon, run a 5K at 7 pm. Or, if you dare, run both!
